Someone I love is abusive relationship..how do I help

I have a loved one that is in an abusive relationship.  Mostly mental abuse but there definatley is physical too.  She is so terrified of her husband that she feels like she cannot do anything, even leave.  I have tried to support her, talk to her, pray for her.  I tell her she needs to leave but she says she cannot because of their son.  She is so afraid to leave because she thinks that he will come after her, so she won't.  She went to a women's shelter once but ended up leaving the next day.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

From the Eyes of the Son

First, I most commend you for loving and supporting your friend.  I can then only tell you what I know as the son of a women who was mentally and emotionally abused (as I was too) for over a decade.  I was a small boy when my mother remarried a horrible narcissist and constantly neglected and emotionally abused my mom.  I'm sure I only saw a fraction of what it did to her and I am still outraged.  You mentioned that she is staying because of her son, well I'm here to tell you that she he should be the cause for her leaving.  I cannot give advice on things I do no know, such as how this man will react, but I do know that every day I fight to be different than the man I grew up with.  I didn't realize this at the time, but this man almost drove my mother to suicide.  I NEVER want to see that happen to any woman ever again.

I tell you this abvreviated version of my story in hopes that maybe you will tell her the dangers that staying can have on her and her son.  I would much rather have seen my mom leave and be devistated for a year, than to have watched what happened over those miserable 12.  I pray for your friend and for you.

A friend,
