What is (Creative) Visualization?

 Visualization, or "Creative Visualization" - the term used in the same-titled best-selling book by Shakti Gawain, is a very simple technique used by countless successful people around the world to achieve whatever they desire.  To visualize simply means to create a mental picture in your mind, but the key to the visualization technique or creative visualization, is to imagine a scene or create a mental picture, with yourself in the first person so that the imagined scene actually feels like it's really happening.  The process is meant less to be a fully conscious thinking/creating process and more to be a sleepy, mind-drifting, feeling process, as when you're having that half-dream-half-reality experience either drifting off to sleep at night or struggling to wake up in the morning.  The latter, feeling process, takes less mental energy and is far more effective.  The focus is more on vividly feeling what you desire rather than vividly seeing it.  Although you may see the picture very clearly, which is fine, the emphasis is on the feelings in your body that excite you and make you feel good because you feel like your dream is coming true.  You can use the process of visualization for achieving any kind of goal, dream, or desire - whether you want to own a beautiful home, create a loving relationship, have more money in the bank, win an award, lose weight and sculpt your body, invent something new, or anything else you desire!  While it is true that what you focus on expands, so consciously focusing on something will eventually bring it about, what you believe at a subconscious level is what you get frequently and easily, so the key to visualization is to let the belief of your attainment of what you desire pervade your subconscious mind, not just your conscious mind.

How / What Do I Visualize?

'When do I visualize?' is almost a more important question than 'how do I visualize?'.  This is because your mind needs to be in just the right state of consciousness to fully experience the powerful effects of visualization.  The sleepy, half-dream-half-reality state described above, or very slightly more awake, (the alpha brain wave state) is basically the state of consciousness you want to get in to visualize.  This is easy to do as you're in bed before you fall completely asleep, or when you're still in bed but waking up to start your day.  There are numerous other times when you can get into this state to visualize as well... if you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, try visualizing; or if you take a nap in the middle of the day, try visualizing before or after you fall asleep or both; or if you just lay down to relax or meditate in the middle of the day you can try visualizing before or after or both.  The more frequently you visualize what you want, the sooner you will achieve it.  Once daily is a minimally appropriate practice, while twice daily or more may be highly effective, depending on the period of time you spend on each visualization.  There is no set rule for how long to spend on your visualization - whatever feels good to you - don't force it because that does not work in your favor and may be discouraging.  One day you may enjoy visualizing for 20 minutes, while another day you may enjoy visualizing for 3 hours, while yet another day you just can't seem to visualize at all.  Do whatever works for you at any given moment, and always enjoy the process!  If you don't enjoy it, you're not doing it right, and if you're not doing it right, it probably won't work for you!
